Muay Thai

History

Originally a warrior art comprising of weaponary as well as empty hand self defence, it was from the early battlefield use that Muay Thai has evolved to it's present form. Know to foreigners as "Thai Boxing", it orgininated in Thailand which was foremerly known as Siam. The art is know to be as much as 3,000 years old! In early days fights were decided on when first blood was drawn, or sometimes to the death! Gloves were not worn then, but fithers wore cloth wrapped around the hands. This cloth was then dipped in resin glue and rolled in sand and fragments of broken glass. there were no "rounds" and there fights took place in a circular ring.

Thai Kings showed a high degree of excellence in the art of Muay Thai and also a large number of Muay Thai exponents were well know throughout the world because of their abilities.

An enormous transformation took place in Muay Thai in the early 1930's with the intriduction of boxing gloves and groin protection, rounds were introtroduced and fights now take place in a boxing ring. A system of weight categories similar to western boxing were also introduced at this time.
